About Private Lessons
Common Questions
How much do private lessons cost? Lessons range from $20-$30 for one half hour session. The rate will depend on your private lesson instructor’s level of degree & experience. Most of our teachers have at least a master’s degree on their instrument.
Interested in a scholarship? Parents/caregivers will need to apply at our website (scottieband.org). Click on the Scholarship Application button at the top of this page. Please complete the enrollment form first then continue to the scholarship application. Completing the scholarship application is optional and is intended to help students in need of lesson financial assistance. However, all Lamar Band families are welcome to apply.
How does scheduling work?
Once you have completed the enrollment form, you will be provided with the instructors contact information via email and you will be able to start organizing lesson dates and times with that instructor as soon as you are ready. Note: Having lessons during the students’ normal class time once a week is normal and encouraged. Please allow two business days to receive the email containing the instructors contact information.
Who can participate in private lessons? Any student in grades 6th-8th can enroll in private lessons. If your child is in Wind Ensemble, it is required for students to take lessons. In the past, Mr. Corpus had incoming beginner 6th grade students wait until after the first full month of classes completed to allow beginner to take lessons. However, we are moving forward with the direction to allow incoming beginners to take private lessons.
Important Notice: Lessons are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. Please be as flexible as possible when scheduling. Keep in mind that many of our teachers travel across the city everyday to schedule as many students as they can. This is their livelihood and they truly are the best! We are excited to see your child be happy and proud of their growth through the Lamar Band program. If you have any questions, please contact Luis.Corpus@austinisd.org
Our Private Lesson Staff
Private lessons help children achieve the greatest amount of success in the least amount of time. Each session is based on the individual student’s learning style and learning pace.
Research consistently shows that private music lessons benefit students in several meaningful ways:
Academic & Cognitive Benefits
Music training strengthens neural connections related to language processing, memory, and mathematical reasoning. Students who take lessons often show improved reading skills and higher academic performance overall.
Social-Emotional Development
One-on-one instruction builds a trusting relationship between teacher and student, which fosters confidence and self-esteem. Students learn to set goals, handle constructive criticism, and develop resilience through the process of mastering difficult pieces.
Executive Function
Regular practice cultivates discipline, focus, and time management — skills that transfer directly to schoolwork and other areas of life. The structured nature of learning an instrument trains students to break complex tasks into manageable steps.
Personalized Learning
Unlike group settings, private lessons allow instruction to be tailored to the individual’s pace, learning style, and interests, leading to faster skill acquisition and greater long-term engagement.
Persistence & Grit
The incremental nature of musical progress — where improvement is earned through sustained effort — teaches students that mastery takes time, reinforcing a growth mindset.
The benefits appear strongest when lessons begin in childhood and continue consistently over time, though students of any age show meaningful gains. Researchers like E. Glenn Schellenberg and studies from institutions such as Northwestern University’s Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory have contributed substantial evidence to this body of knowledge.
We are currently seeking private lesson instructors for double reeds (oboe & bassoon) and French Horn. Continue to submit the applications required for private lesson enrollment and Mr. Corpus will align your student with a respected private lesson instructor even if they are not presented on this site.
